چکیده

Colloidal nanocrystals have long been used to study the dependence of phase stability and transitions on size. Both structural phase stability and phase transitions change dramatically in the nanometre size regime where the surface plays a significant role in determining the overall energetics of the system. We investigate the solid–solid phase transformation of crystallization in amorphous GeTe nanoparticles. We report a colloidal synthetic route to amorphous GeTe nanoparticles. Using in situ X-ray diffraction while heating, we observe the crystallization of the nanoparticles and find a dramatic increase of the crystallization temperature of over 150 C above the bulk value. Using sizeselected nanoparticle films, we show that the crystallization temperature depends strongly on the particle size. In addition, we measure the electrical resistance of nanoparticle films and observe over 5 orders of magnitude lower resistance for the crystalline film compared to the amorphous film. Finally, we discuss the implications of the size-dependence of crystallization in the context of both understanding the behavior of phase stability in the nanosize regime and applications to phase change memory devices.

Colloidal synthesis of germanium nanocrystals

In this study, colloidal germanium nanocrystals were synthesized by a simple and novel method, and their optical properties were also studied. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a surface modifier was used to control the optical properties of colloidal Ge nanocrystals. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was performed to identify the various functional groups present in the sample. ...

Monodisperse Colloidal Gallium Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Low Temperature Crystallization, Surface Plasmon Resonance and Li-Ion Storage

We report a facile colloidal synthesis of gallium (Ga) nanoparticles with the mean size tunable in the range of 12-46 nm and with excellent size distribution as small as 7-8%. When stored under ambient conditions, Ga nanoparticles remain stable for months due to the formation of native and passivating Ga-oxide layer (2-3 nm). The mechanism of Ga nanoparticles formation is elucidated using nucle...

Synthesis and Characterization of Colloidal Nanosilica via an Ultrasound Assisted Route Based on Alkali Leaching of Silica Fume

Colloidal nanosilica is currently being produced by various methods which are mainly high energy intensive and/or not environmentally friendly. It is therefore essential to develop new energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies. This paper introduces a new ultrasound assisted route based on alkali leaching of silica fume for synthesis of colloidal silica nanoparticles. The ef...

Gold catalytic Growth of Germanium Nanowires by chemical vapour deposition method

Germanium nanowires (GeNWs) were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) based on vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism with Au nanoparticles as catalyst and germanium tetrachloride (GeCl4) as a precursor of germanium. Au catalysts were deposited on silicon wafer as a thin film, firstly by sputtering technique and secondly by submerging the silicon substrates in Au colloidal s...

A green approach to the facile synthesis of colloidal platinum nanoparticles by Preyssler polyoxometalate

In the present study, platinum nanoparticles were synthesized through an effective, facile and green method using H14[NaP5W30O110], a Preyssler-structured polyoxometalate, under UV light irradiation. Preyssler plays the roles of photocatalyst, reducing agent and stabilizer in the synthesis of Pt nanoparticles. The effect of different parameters, i.e. time, propan-2-ol volume, pH, molar ratio of...
